Net Metering in Utah for Rocky Mountain Power Customers changes Nov 14, 2017.

Net Metering in Utah for Rocky Mountain Power Customers changes Nov 14, 2017. Just an FYI. Best net meter policy in Utah will close Nov. 14, 2017. You just have to get a net meter application into Rocky Mtn Power by Nov. 14, 2017. This just has to be sizing and some basic info. You can do your plans and layout later. Lots of installers around who can do this. Not sure how it would go DIY. Installation has to occur within one year. Info from Rocky Mountain's website. http://ift.tt/2zmtLp4 What is the grandfathered net metering program? Customers applying for a customer generation interconnection prior to close of business on November 14, 2017 are considered part of the grandfathered net metering program. When does the grandfathered net metering program end? Current net metering customers and customers who submit a completed interconnection application to the Company on or before the close of business on November 14, 2017 will remain on the grandfathered net metering program thro...

Phoenix SRP Demand Charge workaround

Phoenix SRP Demand Charge workaround I had a presentation from PEP Solar last week. Interesting concept to work around the demand charge for SRP. Their model has you buy a somewhat small system to allow 1 large device (water heater, AC unit, dryer) to run during peak production. Once 5PM hits, you pretty much have to live like a hermit and not use any large appliances to stay under the 3Kw penalty. You might be able to run one appliance if you are getting marginal output from your solar array, but the risk/reward is scary. For my 5600 square foot house with an average utility bill of $300 per month, they sized me at a 4.2Kw system. I assume they size everyone at that so you can run your one appliance on solar alone and the other 3Kw from the grid runs the TV, lights, radio. They included a shut off device that would automatically only allow one AC unit to run at a time, and also would limit the dryer, etc. So you control the large appliances with software. The software also watched ...

Tracking solar array I am currently building a 7kW tracking array. I have been studying the tracker systems I can find, Sunstalker, Home CS and some others that are just too sketchy to even consider. Should we be worried about the new republican tax plan doing away with the renewable energy tax credit? I'm scheduled for an install of Jan 2018, slightly worried that the new tax plan will do away with the 30% tax credit. How can I help solar in Florida?

How can I help solar in Florida? Hi guys, I'm a born and raised Floridian who is very interested in helping (in whatever way I can) get solar power moving forward in my home state. As many of you know, we won a close battle last November in defeating Amendment 1 . That was a huge win, but it seems like the movement toward truly embracing the benefits of solar energy in Florida is still lacking. I just came back from a trip to Hawaii, and I was amazed at how much they are embracing solar energy, and other renewable resources. I am now determined to help propel this movement in my own state, but I am having a hard time locating the right people to contact. I don't see any pending bills being proposed, and I definitely think there should be something on this next ballot for the midterm elections. I am hoping that the lovely people of r/solar could help get me in contact with the right people for the job. Any help is appreciated. Mahalo for caring about our environment, and ou...

Advice: The importance of bidding on residential installs. Or how to get from $5.68 to $2.80 per watt and save $$$. Just finished the bidding process and I thought I would share my experiences. I was one of the first members of the community to have solar, but it was a hot water system at a time when PV solar was just in its infancy. I had been following the news about declining solar costs and determined that PV had finally reached the price point to make it economical. The first thing I did was contact the most popular installer for my town to get a quote. They sent out a consultant to assess my property, shading, etc. They then presented me with a very slick document that talked all about the economic benefits, payback period, etc. The cost was $5.68 per watt for a 345 Sunpower system. This was outrageous and totally contrary to what I had read. I almost gave up on solar right there. After waiting a few months I thought I would see if others could offer a lower price. The next qu...

Solar newb question! 24v panel into 12v system?

Solar newb question! 24v panel into 12v system? Excited to finally take my electricity off grid for a tiny trailer home! Researching setups, struggling a little with details: I've a 240w 24v panel readily available. I've two great 12v batteries. I am in the pacific northwest where full sunny days aren't the norm during winter months. Some things I've read suggest that a 24v panel charging a 12v system may be more efficient than a 24v system when cloudy days are frequent. 12v inverters are cheaper than 24v inverters—but 24v panel for 12v system needs more expensive mppt controller for efficiency? So, I could go with a cheaper charge controller but more expensive inverter and run a 24v system? Which would make the most sense for PNW living? THEN Pure sine inverter or modified wave? Charging computer and phones. Are modified wave inverters actually dangerous for our fancy (not medical) electronic devices? Thanks, communty, for whatever guidance or suggestions you m...

Solar project for car Hi I love driving and to be able to go into the middle of nowhere and enjoy myself, whether it be camping, hiking, or anything I guess. My plan is to use a roof rack kit and and attach the solar panels to a bracket that can be installed, removed, assembled, and broken down easily as required. For the first iteration of this project, I would like to just work on getting the right equipment, mounting it properly and maybe reasonably aerodynamically for a slow drive around town, by roughly following the curve of the car. As far as real estate goes, here's what I've got: Roof in question (not my picture) Measurements from trim of windshield to trim of rear window, not taking into account curvature In case my handwriting is too bad for you guys, the dimensions are 52" front to back, by 42" side to side. 4kwh all-in-one solar power system

4kwh all-in-one solar power system I have been testing and playing with this "4020B" Inverter, Charge Controller, Charger, Transfer switch. The power is clean on the scope and it has no trouble holding steady at 2000watts of load. The 18650 cells are Samsung based and the build quality on this thing is great for China. Now granted this thing has no UL certs on it so I would NOT use this sucker in an structure with humans for insurance reasons. That being said I think this is one hell of a deal at $2600USD. This can give a cabin/rv fast easy to move / install power. I put some pics here http://ift.tt/2h6tXxW I have no "skin" in this. I am just sharing a neat product I found from china. new standing seam metal roof- clamp to ribs/ rib height question

new standing seam metal roof- clamp to ribs/ rib height question Hi all, we are looking to install a standing seam metal roof. Our roofer has recommended upgrading and getting 1 3/4 inch high ribs instead of standard 1 inch ribs. They will be 16 inches apart. He says the 1 3/4 inch ribs will allow for clamping solar panels right to the ribs without drilling, but the 1 inch will not. Of course, they are a lot more expensive, maybe 30% more, just for higher ribs. Will this really make installing panels easier? If it matters, the metal roofing is design span hp by asc building supply. Thanks! submitted by /u/mammothbones [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2y0My94

Can I get a real ELI5 on solar power? Probably to run a heat pump on a pool but maybe more.

Can I get a real ELI5 on solar power? Probably to run a heat pump on a pool but maybe more. I really do mean a complete idiots guide because I'm struggling to get my head around the jargon. Lots of videos and blogs I've seen just seem to assume a degree of knowledge that I don't have. Currently (in Spain, south facing) I have solar hot water and can switch from that to a gas boiler for hot water. I didn't put the system in and I have no idea what it needs in terms of maintenance, but it works well. I would like to put in pool heating using a heat pump powered by solar but I glaze over when (sales) people start saying, "well you need batteries and an inverterator and you'll need to generate 3 jibber-jabbers" I think, if I'm installing it (not me) it makes sense to add parts of the house too. Maybe the aircon? If I do that, presumably I need something to connect to the main supply and switch? How do I know when I'm generating electric for "f...

Two charge controllers in parallel

Two charge controllers in parallel I've got two charge controllers: a pwm 30A and a mppt 40A. Can I connect them in parallel to get 50+ amps going to the battery? Background, I've got a solar bank on the roof of my RV. If I expand the solar, I'm going to outgrow my charge controller. Fishing additional wires down from the roof to the basement is a major pain in the ass, so adding a completely isolated charge controller is not desirable. Plus I've already got a spare pwm charge controller just sitting here. So my options are 1. Throw away some nice/expensive charge controllers and completely upgrade to an even more expensive one. 2. Spend all freaking weekend fishing another set of wires so I can add the controllers separately 3. Add the two controllers in parallel and let the current flow to both/either depending on whichever one has capacity at any given time. Option 3 seems like it should work, but I can't find a single example where someone has tried it. Any...

System peaking at less than 2/3 of promised watt output

System peaking at less than 2/3 of promised watt output Just recently had a relatively small system (3.15kW) installed and turned on about a week ago in LA. I realize that due to the time of year I'm not going to be generating as much power as I will during the Summer. What's confusing me though is that when I have peak sunlight during the day I am only pulling 2kW at most. This was from a couple days ago. Am I missing something? Is this normal? Each of the panels are Hyundai 500W and using a Solaredge inverter. I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask. Thanks. submitted by /u/plumhead27 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2xPdm7n

Solar monitoring software

Solar monitoring software Is it possible to change the software used to monitor solar panels? I'm shopping quotes (Energy sage) and I don't want to be stuck with poor monitoring software or have to deal with unsupported software if a company goes out of business or just has poor support in general. Are there free options? What to stay away from? Best available? Thanks! submitted by /u/theeldudearino [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2xOXCBc

To install solar or not...

To install solar or not... Hello all, I live in Ocean County New Jersey. Early last week, a gentleman knocked on the door offering to talk with me about installing a solar system on my house with little cost to me… He works for one of the top 5 companies that I recognize, and is pushing the NJ Clean Energy program. Currently, my average monthly bill for 12 months is $94, 7710kw usage… Say $1,200 a year. Solar system installed will be a 7mw system. With this program, I am paying off a loan of the total system. My bill will be $144, fixed, with some variables I’ll explain below. The total system costs $32,760. Mosaic bank holds loan to do installation, permits equipment, everything… For 2017 taxes, I will get 30% back from the FED on this program @ $9,828, leaving me $22,932 to take care of. In addition to this system, I will be enabled to obtain SRECs for a total of 15 years. In NJ the market is variable. Anywhere from $190-290 per SREC. 94% offset, leaving me 260kw ...

Buying a house with 17 years remaining on Solar City?

Buying a house with 17 years remaining on Solar City? I live in Colorado and am looking at buying a house. The house is GREAT. The downside is that they have 17 years left on the SCTY lease. The rate they have started at $0.09 kwh. It raises 2.9% every year. Colorado is a very sunny place, and they claim they've only actually paid their electricity bill one month. We currently live in an apartment building and our electricity is ~$40 a month. But this house has central AC and I assume it would probably be around double that. I'm incredibly nervous about buying with this lease. The homeowners are arguing it adds value, but since they aren't owned solar panels I don't see how that's possible. And when I go to sell I'm worried buyers will feel the same way I do. Two questions: Does the price seem good? $0.09 kwh from Solar City. My last electricity bill was $37 for 306.6 kwh Does this impact value as much as I think it does? Thank you very much for you...

How much energy is net metered by an average home?

How much energy is net metered by an average home? I’m trying to find a general average for how much a home is sending back to the grid via net metering. Basically my question is, if I wanted to power my home 100% on solar, in the absence of net metering how much excess energy would I produce annually? 20% of system size? 40%? I know this is slightly different than the net metering question, but I figured there is some real data on net metering and would give some guidepost, though I can’t seem to find it submitted by /u/bejonly [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2ghvUGL

The Effect of Natural Disasters on Electricity Prices

The Effect of Natural Disasters on Electricity Prices Solar leasing promoters have long claimed that electricity costs will keep rising, but we haven’t see this happening – yet.  Actually, almost all of the standard generation sources are benefiting from lower costs – natural gas is low, coal is low, and nuclear is… well it’s not dramatically more expensive than it has been. There is no doubt in my mind, however, that prices are going to go up. http://ift.tt/2x1KWqR

A Helpful Roadmap for California's Certified “Smart Inverters”

A Helpful Roadmap for California's Certified “Smart Inverters” Solar inverters are becoming more intelligent this year. California’s Rule 21, which is now partially in effect, governs the safety of PV arrays and their interconnection communications with the local investor-owned utility.  The rule has three basic phases, of which the first came into effect Sept. 8 under a draft resolution of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The effective date for the other two phases has not yet been set, however a CPUC vote on the draft resolution is set for October 12, and a California Smart Inverter Working Group (SWIG) workshop on Phases 2 and 3 is scheduled for Nov. 17. http://ift.tt/2ypHNFg
