Sharing space between parks and energy production: walking in the shadows of solar panels

Sharing space between parks and energy production: walking in the shadows of solar panels In newly build areas without trees, photovoltaic solar panel parks may be a good option. Raised solar panels, lowest points 3 meters high. Some can be fixed, some rotate in 1 axis and some in 2 axis. Putting solar panels on roofs has upsides, but space there is limited and ground level parks are better for sun-tracking rotating solar panels. Large solar panel arrays are usually fenced-off and in boring rows, but that could be different. The panels could be in random shapes as parts of faux-trees or monuments. Of course it is nicer to have real trees, but the solar panels have to be somewhere. Better have dual use area than cut a forest area and fence it for solar panels. Lawn and bushes will grow under the solar panels. Sacrifices have to be made for any form of energy. submitted by /u/herkato5 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2q0QrqV

Got my electricity bill for the year with solar. Looking for discounts, rebates or credits.

Got my electricity bill for the year with solar. Looking for discounts, rebates or credits. I live in California, we bought our solar panels and had them installed in February/March 2017. So for those of you that dont know when you have solar they send you a bill at the end of 12 months for the full amount that you used over your solar for the year. We have about an acre of land with a house and basically a small car shop in the back with lots of stuff using electricity. Our bill for the year is 7000$. Im not mad about the bill... I knew it was coming and it is what it is but im looking if there is any discounts, rebates, or credits i get for the solar? Can someone help me out? Im coming up with nothing after many google searches submitted by /u/Lucipurrrrrrr [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2EkKdVQ

Backup Power Solution

Backup Power Solution Hey all. I'm moving into a new house and I'd like to install solar panels -- pretty much as a source of backup power. I live in CA and am nervous about earthquakes. To be most cost effective I was thinking of leasing the panels from Solar City or a place like that, and then buying a Tesla Powerwall or maybe some other battery solution. Am I missing anything obvious here? Total newbie and would appreciate any tips or advice. Thanks! submitted by /u/NermalArbuckle [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2EhE9NU

Why is having solar installed so expensive?

Why is having solar installed so expensive? I recently posted for the first time about a somewhat sketchy deal and decided not to move forward with them. On my last post people told me the price was way too high. Today we have another local company out for a quote and it's another quote around the same really high price. He told me all the products that would be in the system and they add up to under $7k unless I found something totally off when I searched on Google. Why then is it over $20k (just got the final quote - $24k) for to have the system installed? A little detail about this quote: 5.2kW system w/ 18 panels Panels are Axitec Solar 290W Sunny Boy 3000 Inverter Am I just contacting the wrong companies? Is there something else I should look for when calling about quotes? ETA: The final price we ended up with was $17k before the 30% tax credit. submitted by /u/vitani88 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2CfAh2r

Anything I missed to consider before going Solar?

Anything I missed to consider before going Solar? State of WA resident here. I moved in to a new construction home and planning to go Solar. I will probably need 5.4 KW/year. I checked with a Solar company and their estimate is 21K (including tax). The panels are black on black. There are no trees blocking and the home is ideal for solar. Following are the incentives: 30% federal tax incentive $0.21/kw produced up to 50% cost of the system up to 8 years. reduction in energy bills Solar company also offering 110% guaranteed incentive return if the solar panels doesn't produce the promised 5.4kw. 25 years warranty on the system. I have not gotten a 2nd or 3rd opinion. Is this normal price? I will probably apply for Solar loan. Is there anything else I need to consider. submitted by /u/bxkrish [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2Cmbt5U

I got a solar panel...now what?

I got a solar panel...now what? Some years ago, I got a 100 watt solar panel for my dad. Yes. Just a solar panel. As in literally nothing else. It's got a bit of cord coming out the back end. And none of the solar installers in Texas will do anything unless it's bought in a package that comes with the installation....which it wasn't. It's actually really pissing me off that it's not being used. So. What else do I need to buy to get it to work? Mounting equipment is obvious. I assume some sort of inverter is required? Is there a way to get it to let devices drain directly from it? (Yes, not ideal for electronics. I know.) submitted by /u/SangoProductions [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2leUuLv

Are solar panels worth it for an already energy efficient home?

Are solar panels worth it for an already energy efficient home? I live in a new home in Florida that's extremely energy efficient. Our electricity bill is usually less than $100/mo, even in the summer. Winter months are usually ~$70-$85. Of that, we have a customer fee of $9.50 that we will always have to pay with or without solar. We are interested in a system that doesn't cost more than our current bill and will help during hurricane outages. We've been talking to a solar salesman today and he's told us the following (please note that I don't know a whole lot about this so I'm just relaying the info he's given me): We will need 17 panels, which will provide 4.1kW of power. This will be an offset of 77%. They will "throw in" a battery, but this comes with a catch. They will give us the battery and 14 panels. For every referral they get from us, they will give us an additional panel for free to get us to 5.1kW. He swears we will have 17 panel...

EET thinking of changing to Solar Electrician

EET thinking of changing to Solar Electrician TLDR, Title really says it all. I'm a Electronics Engineering Technologist (3 year, Americans call it an Associates Degree) I'm hearing about some opportunities in the field of Solar Electrician and considering filling the need. Now in my job I do a lot of Electrical work. Electronics isn't very different than Electrical, especially since I do plenty with high voltage (28,000V) electronics. I work a lot with small scale solar (around 500W) all the time too, running small sensors and a cell phone from solar panels and batteries. I calculate the sun position regularly to find true directions, which should help with pointing panels and understanding solar angles, and I understand the physics of how solar works. Taking a course should be a breeze for me. So I'm looking for training programs and see NABCEP. Is that the gold standard certification? I'm also hearing about needing to be journeyman electrician. Can I catapult...

Would it be as easy as adding an inverter to each turbine, and tapping into 2 strings? Would I run into problems with the enphase system being confused or shutting down because only two strings at night are making power? Will the enphase micro support nonsolar? Getting solar installed in freezing rain I'm scheduled to finally get my solar panels installed on my roof in a couple days, but the weather forecast says 100% chance of freezing rain (teetering around 30-33 degrees) for most of the day. Is it a bad idea to let them do it in that weather? For all I know they'll decide to reschedule it themselves, but in case they're crazy enough to want to do it, I'm wondering if I should worry about the quality of the work in those conditions. submitted by /u/almiki [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2ph5wEs

So confused with KW vs KWH.

So confused with KW vs KWH. So I am VERY new to the solar game and trying to figure out how to understand all of this data. We did a quick test today of the solar (I'm still waiting for full inspection) and it showed production of 10.9 kw. https://twitter.com/ccostan/status/943536465404973057 My app also shows that yesterday I used 60KwH from the grid (no solar yet). If I can consistently produce 10.9 KW for the 4 - 5 Sun Hours, how much KWH power will I have produced? Sorry if this is a super easy question but I am just so confused with the information and tutorials out there. Thanks CARLO. submitted by /u/ccostan [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2BeulSI

Looking at a home this week with solar panels already installed (NY). Some questions.

Looking at a home this week with solar panels already installed (NY). Some questions. Good morning all, My wife and are starting our first time home buying process and viewing homes. I am a very big proponent of solar and green energy in general. No matter what house we buy it has to be in a good position to utilize solar panels. One house on our list already had solar panels installed on the roof. The listing says they are already “owned outright.” I have some questions I was hoping you guys could answer or send me to the right place to find an answer. If they are already paid off does that mean they are older and less effective? My understanding is that in NY the energy generated goes to the main grid and then we receive a credit from the energy company, is his correct? Does having solar panels on a roof mean the roof will need to be replaced sooner/harder more expensive to replace? Should I ask if there is a warranty on the panels? Is there a gigawatt level (?) I should be ...

Question about power output of solar panels.

Question about power output of solar panels. Hello and thanks for reading. I am currently considering going to live into a place that has solar panels to power the lights in the house. The fridge runs on gas as well as the heater and kitchen. My question is if these solar panels and the battery (pictures bellow) are enough to run an Asus notebook (19,5V - 4,62 amps, 90 watts) some 5 or 6 hours daily, from 19.00 till 24.00 (sun goes down at 18.00 in winter and at around 21.00 in summer) and the router as well. To use the washing machine I'd have a petrol fueled electricity generator. If these solar panels are not enough for my PC, what should I buy? I would really like to live in this place, but electricity is a must have :) thanks for the time BATTERY / hand for scale DC - AC converter SOLAR PANELS 1 SOLAR PANELS 2 SOLAR PANELS 3 submitted by /u/SpeakerOfDeath [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2BfsxgF

Brain not working to do solar math...Assistance needed So I have a Goal zero yeti 400 AGM lead acid setup + an extra 33 ah AGM attached via the power pole. So I think this gets me to 66ah? If I have a 20,000 Mah Anker battery pack to charge iPhones, iPad etc.. How many charges should I get out of the Goal Zero Yeti 400 66Ah setup? I only want to take the Goal Zero system down to 80% before I recharge it to get the longest life out of the batteries. I hate to admit it but I'm struggling with the math here due to all the variables. I.E.: 12v, 66Ah, Mah, Watt per hour. Making sense of a quote. Thoughts?

Making sense of a quote. Thoughts? I had a guy come and sit down for a quote today and I get the feeling they are high-balling me on the cost. They quoted a 14.75 kw system using LG panels and solaredge inverter/optimizer for $54k before incentives, or $3.65/W. That is the price per watt I'm seeing for New York State, but I though it would be lower since I'm not in NYC. Also, this is a standard roof install on a newer home (less than 10 years). This seems high based on what I've seen elsewhere, but wanted to check with you folks here first before discontinuing our conversation. I need quotes from other companies, but if this is what I'm looking at, I might have to reconsider. submitted by /u/nuje10 [visit reddit] [comments] http://ift.tt/2CCeiyK

Portable solar troubleshooting, battery backup not charging

Portable solar troubleshooting, battery backup not charging Hi Everyone, I'm trying to figure out how to best use this solar panel that I got for my birthday last month. It works great charging my phone, watch, or chromebook when I plug them in directly. It does NOT charge an older version of this battery backup . I've been thinking that maybe the output from the panels isn't consistent enough for the battery or something? I'm not sure if I need to be looking for a new battery, or a controller to add in the middle? It seems like it should work, but is frustrating that its not. I really just don't know and was hoping for some advice. I'd really like to have my phone be completely solar as much as possible.
