At pricing similar to $89M for 106 MW-AC (84¢/W), $1-2 billion a year would fund approximately 1.2 GW-AC to 2.4 GW-AC of solar power. If we take a standard 25% oversizing, then the DC cost of these projects might fall to 67¢/W-DC, and we’d be getting 1.5 GW-DC to 3.0 GW-DC from that oil money.

Shedding Light - Ask /r/Solar anything October 30, 2018

Shedding Light - Ask /r/Solar anything October 30, 2018 Any and all solar related questions are welcome in this weekly post. There are no "stupid" questions. Please note: This is a community response based feature post in a smallish subreddit. An answer is not guaranteed nor is the timeliness of any responses but thankfully questions are often answered by the frequent participants here. Because of variances in things like regulations, prices, and amounts of solar radiation, it is useful to provide general location info such as country and state when asking for help/info regarding your solar project. However, please avoid giving very specific details of the locale so you are not violating the site rule on personal info. For example, name the region but not the address. Nemaska Sprints to Early Lead In Lithium Mining Race

Nemaska Sprints to Early Lead In Lithium Mining Race Thank Elon Musk with his Tesla ( TSLA ) gigafactory for sparking a global obsession with lithium-ion batteries and the materials need to turn them out.  Claimed by Musk to be the largest building in the world, the factory was planned to reach capacity in stages.  By the time the factory is fully completed in 2020, production capacity is expected to be 150 gigawatt hours of battery packs. Ever since construction of Musk’s gigafactory began in 2014, investors around the world have been fretting over the adequacy of lithium supplies in particular.  The gigafactory concept appeared to trigger a whole slew of ‘me too’ factories with at least a dozen now in construction and commissioning stages in the North America, Europe, China and Southeast Asia.  According to Roskill, a London-based consulting firm, lithium demand from battery cell makers is expected to double by 2027, to one million metric tons ...

Is panel production degradation time-based, environmental, or production based?

Is panel production degradation time-based, environmental, or production based? As solar panels age, production drops by some percent a year. Is the mechanism for this purely panel age based, based on environmental exposure, based on production, or some blend? As specific examples, let's say I had the following identical panels: Panel A mounted outside, south facing, with a microinverter doing grid export so everything it could produce, it did produce. Panel B, same place, with a microinverter configured to only put out 50% of peak - so it only produces half of the theoretical output. Panel C, same place, not hooked up at all. Panel D, kept indoors, in storage. At the end of a period of time (say, 20 years), how will they stack up in terms of maximum output power, and why? If there are good papers on the mechanisms, feel free to point me to them. I just haven't been able to find the answers to this yet. submitted by /u/Syonyk [visit reddit] [comments] https://if...

How to store moey energy for my solar array?

How to store moey energy for my solar array? Sorry if this isn't how you ask on this site, in relatively new and don't get on much. I have a few solar panels, cells, etc. Working on making my own cheaply. I was wondering, what's the best way to preserve energy I create? I don't have an excess yet, but it's getting there. In working ofd a car battery now. Should I hook another one in series/parallel? Or just look into getting a (relatively cheap) large battery in which to store/maintain the energy when it's created? I use the one battery in constant charge as a revoir for energy to power my TV right now, have an inverter to go from the battery to the tv. It's an experiment I've had in the making for a while now. Any suggestions on battery? Is it better to get a larger battery or many smaller ones in advance. If I get many smaller ones, should I hook the positive/negative to seperate ends? I took some electric underatanding in college. Thanks in advance. ...

Will it slide!? Solar install for alpine town

Will it slide!? Solar install for alpine town Hi solar folks, I recently bought a home in a small mountain town in south west BC Canada. I have quite a large south facing roof sloped at 5/12 (~24 degrees). From what I understand that is ideal for solar panels on the 49th parallel! I'm starting to look into solar panels to power our house. One day I plan to convert my gas furnace to some electric heat pumps and gas guzzling SUV to an electric car. My roof is metal, and designed to shed snow. My city requires a snow load of ~160PSF... Last year we got ~6 ft of snow on the ground to put things into perspective. Our neighbours with shingled roofs had ~3 feet of snow on their roof. If I were to completely cover my south facing roof with solar panels, would the snow still slide? Would I end up with major ice dams underneath the solar panels (water melting hitting the colder metal roof)? Does anyone have real life experience with this? Can it be done safely? submitted by /u/maxl3ell ...

Upfront or market prices for SRECs?

Upfront or market prices for SRECs? In Massachusetts with a 8.85kW system, with annual estimated production to be 7600 kWh. Sol Systems gave me an up-front SREC quote for around $7,000. We would put the money back into the house to make some improvements (adding a 2nd bathroom), which seems more tempting to me rather than getting a trickle of funds over the 10 year term. What are all your thoughts? Under SREC II, we're in at the 0.8 rate, meaning I would generate 76MWh over 10 years, approx 60 SRECs. If prices stay around $280, it seems I should reject the upfront offer, but I'm not sure if they'll always be going for $280+, will price go down in later years? submitted by /u/_potato_123 [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2EHi9As

Install coming up, what to do?

Install coming up, what to do? I am scheduled for an install next week and am trying to figure out what I should be doing during the process. Should I stay home for a few hours during the initial install phase of putting up the panels to provide feedback? How much customer interaction might be required? Is it possible that the initial panel orientation\configuration plan might be be good and another plan will need to be made on the fly? If I should spend time home during the install what points are most critical? submitted by /u/ConstructedHome5 [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2O8f4sF

Starting a small-scale solar farm for tax credits or even income?

Starting a small-scale solar farm for tax credits or even income? Hi all, My folks have been retired for a bit up on a farm here in GA. They have about 300 acres, with 4 approximately 400 foot long chicken coops (roughtly 25 feet wide?) - the big commercial ones. My dad currently is producing Hay for the property and stores it in the chicken houses. Chicken houses are structurally sound and were in good working order prior to him purchasing the farm. Previous owner sold all farming equipment. I guess my question is - would it be feasible to think that the roofs of the chicken houses could be lined with solar panels and this be utilized as a tax credit or income source? Houses are in direct sunlight for majority, if not entire day. I am in GA and I know there are fewer solar incentives here, but just thinking out loud.... I'm very new to solar, but we're just trying to think of ways to make my folk's land make money for itself. Any direction, thoughts, etc would be g...

System size vs inverter size

System size vs inverter size I'm getting a few quotes for a solar system for my house. Two companies have quoted me ~4kW systems with a 5kW inverter. One company quoted me a 6.27kW system with a 5kW inverter. This didn't make sense to me, how can 6 fit into 5? I asked the salesman for clarity and this is what he said. The maximum allowed solar installation capacity for single phase household is 5.0 kW. Also 130% of Solar PV capacity is installed to receive maximum output because the system efficiency is 77%. This sounds like technobabble to me. I'm a newby when it comes to solar systems and this kind of thing. Can somebody help put my mind at rest? submitted by /u/PURITyKin [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2z3gqiM

Midwest ETA Certification Workshops

Midwest ETA Certification Workshops A good friend of mine holds week-long and sometimes weekend-long solar installer certification workshops. These are generally located in the US Midwest, and charge an affordable price both for someone looking for a career change, and for someone looking to design and/or install their own system to save on consultancy costs. http://bluerockstation.com/workshops/range.listevents/- Jay Warmke is a fantastic guy, a great teacher, and will let you even retake the ETA certification test if you do not pass it the first time. The cost of the test and textbook is included in the course, and he himself wrote his ETA certified textbook. Partnership Provides a Better Way to Buy Renewable Energy

Partnership Provides a Better Way to Buy Renewable Energy It would be difficult to overestimate the impact that corporate procurement of renewable energy, primarily through power purchase agreements (PPAs), has had on the overall renewable market. In less than a decade, renewable energy created from corporate PPAs went from zero to more than 13 gigawatts in the U.S. alone. Microsoft is one of the largest players in this market, beginning with a 110-megawatt wind project in Texas in 2013 to a portfolio of more than 1.2 gigawatts in six states and three continents. https://ift.tt/2POUKxX

How Edge Analytics Will Usher in a Renewable Future

How Edge Analytics Will Usher in a Renewable Future Despite the U.S.’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Accord, state governments and corporations alike continue to look to renewable energies to power our future. Similarly, the European Union has adopted a series of initiatives aimed at cutting greenhouse gasses, improving energy efficiency, and producing more power from renewable sources by 2020 to meet its climate and energy targets. Even in developing countries strapped for resources, solar panels now line rooftops of buildings in a drive to combat reliance on imported energy and oil. https://ift.tt/2SfdMiv

Should I go with the larger system?

Should I go with the larger system? Hi Everyone, I have been doing a ton of research over the last month and have already spoken to several local installers here in Maryland about getting a roof-mounted system on my house. Our total usage is around 27,000 kWh per year. We received several quotes and have decided on a highly regarded small company, however, we're torn on whether we should go with the larger system that would offset 97-100%+ of our usage, or the smaller system that would offset 71-75% of our current usage. With the degradation of the system over time, it seems like the larger system makes sense, however, we 1) would have to shell out quite a bit more money, and 2) would have to put panels on the garage and feel like that would make it more difficult to sell our house down the road should we need to move, however, we do not plan on moving for at least 10+ years. Pay back period for either system is 8-9 years based on total production using conservative numbers and...

Is a "Jr Solar Installer" role a good route towards working as an engineer in the solar industry?

Is a "Jr Solar Installer" role a good route towards working as an engineer in the solar industry? I graduated in May with my Bachelor's degree in chemical and biological engineering and I want to work in the solar industry in some way. I'd like to either find a position designing solar panel arrays for installation or perhaps doing research on developing solar technology. I haven't been able to get on with a solar company in a drafting or engineering role yet, so I have been talking with companies about working for them as a solar installer. I have a few upcoming interviews. Is this a good method towards becoming a solar engineer? If so, how long realistically should I expect to work as an installer before moving into an engineering role? submitted by /u/colehole5 [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2yvSYuT

An answer is not guaranteed nor is the timeliness of any responses but thankfully questions are often answered by the frequent participants here.
