Will it slide!? Solar install for alpine town
Hi solar folks, I recently bought a home in a small mountain town in south west BC Canada. I have quite a large south facing roof sloped at 5/12 (~24 degrees). From what I understand that is ideal for solar panels on the 49th parallel! I'm starting to look into solar panels to power our house. One day I plan to convert my gas furnace to some electric heat pumps and gas guzzling SUV to an electric car.
My roof is metal, and designed to shed snow. My city requires a snow load of ~160PSF... Last year we got ~6 ft of snow on the ground to put things into perspective. Our neighbours with shingled roofs had ~3 feet of snow on their roof.
If I were to completely cover my south facing roof with solar panels, would the snow still slide? Would I end up with major ice dams underneath the solar panels (water melting hitting the colder metal roof)? Does anyone have real life experience with this? Can it be done safely?
