Help

Help So me and a partner were gonna to into business with my cousin who has been in the solar industry for a few years, he has his own LLC but mostly does contractor work. We were gonna come in and get 2 teams together and do additional contract work till we get enough funding for a sales team. Me and partner came in with funds the team, vehicles and were working on branding and creating social media presence. Then my cousin started acting shady and not returning our calls giving vague answers to why he was avoiding us! He would tell us that he has contract work for the Bay Area but we need to put a team together. No problem me and my business partner have that handled but then never responds back and is avoiding our calls, finally got a hold of him and he says he has a team taking care of it! So by then me and partner decide that maybe going into business with him isn’t wise especially since I’ve heard from family he’s bad at what he does and he doesn’t pay a lot of his workers! So d...

Solar Carports

Solar Carports I live near Sacramento, CA and have a 3-car driveway and I would love to get a solar structure that shades or partially shades my driveway. Does anyone know of any solar installers that are into this sort of thing? And why isn't this more of a thing for single family home applications? Something like this would be sweet if it has solar panels on it instead of polycarbonate sheets. https://images.homedepot-static.com/productImages/d90a45f8-82a0-4215-badc-743995a63532/svn/palram-carports-703727-64_1000.jpg As an aside I'd love to have 1-2 Tesla Powerwall2s as well. submitted by /u/xucchini [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2vsDPIq

How Wind and Hydro Power Plus Energy Storage Are Paving the Way to 100 Percent Renewables in Alaska

How Wind and Hydro Power Plus Energy Storage Are Paving the Way to 100 Percent Renewables in Alaska While most of the world struggles with stabilizing renewables on the grid, a small island in Alaska has it all figured out. Kodiak Island, a place where you’ll find a self-sufficient community encircled by expanse wilderness, is known for its wild bears, its fish processing industry, and — of most interest to those in the energy storage sector —f or its nearly 100 percent clean energy microgrid. Wind, water and energy storage are the elements that have almost completely sunk fossil fuels, enabling the island’s affordable energy rates and miniscule carbon footprint: two achievements many grid operators strive to attain for their own networks. https://ift.tt/2v3zBb5

Shedding Light - Ask /r/Solar anything July 31, 2018 Any and all solar related questions are welcome in this weekly post. There are no "stupid" questions. Please note: This is a community response based feature post in a smallish subreddit. An answer is not guaranteed nor is the timeliness of any responses but thankfully questions are often answered by the frequent participants here. Because of variances in things like regulations, prices, and amounts of solar radiation, it is useful to provide general location info such as country and state when asking for help/info regarding your solar project. However, please avoid giving very specific details of the locale so you are not violating the site rule on personal info. For example, name the region but not the address. Bion: Waste To Dollars

Image
Bion: Waste To Dollars Earlier this week  Bion Environmental Technologies  ( BNET )  received approval of a patent for its proprietary ammonia recovery process.  Bion’s technology converts livestock wastes into ammonium bicarbonate.  Patent protection in the U.S. paves the way for Bion to deliver an environmentally friendly chemical to the market at attractive profit margins. Ammonium bicarbonate is used for a variety of purposes from leavening to crop additives.   It is the fertilizer market that has caught Bion’s attention.  The company intends to ‘close the loop’ for the agricultural sector by helping livestock producers economically dispose of waste and then delivering a fertilizer for food crops that qualifies as organic. It is an attractive market.  Market Research Nest, an industry research firm, estimates the global ammonium bicarbonate market was valued at $1.4 billion in 2017.  China is the larg...

Solar panel efficiency question

Solar panel efficiency question Panel setup: 3x REC 290 Watt Solar Panel 1x MC4 Y Branch Connector Solar Panel Parallel Connection 1M3F+3M1F 1x MC4 Solar Panel Extension Cable Adaptor Connector 1x 1000W Grid Tie Inverter Stackable MPPT Pure Sine Wave In this setup, I'm measuring about 450 watts of output from the inverter, which is hooked up to 3 solar panels. The panels are rated at 290 watts each, which amounts to 870 watts output. However, it is said that these panels have a 16% efficiency rating. I'm a bit confused about how the efficiency rating means to my setup. Am I supposed to be getting 870 watts output or 139.2 watts (16% of 870)? Am I getting something wrong? Is there a problem with the inverter or panels? submitted by /u/ilalalayou [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2v5i5TC

Need confirmation about oversizing solaredge inverter

Need confirmation about oversizing solaredge inverter Only recently solaredge inverters became available where i live. I'm designing a ~10.5kWp Solar system but the least powerful solaredge inverter available has 17kW and the only optimizer available is the P700(2:1). The P700 requires at least 26 panels and at most 11.250W(datasheet) So i'm looking at using 30x350Wp(10500Wp) which means only ~62% of inverter rated power. I'll let the client know that if he wants to increase his energy output he can either add another 2 panels or 26+ panels I'm sure this makes no sense in america but this is a different situation. Economically it makes sense here as there are shading issues and micro-inverters are more expensive. The solaredge sitedesigner tool says it's ok, am i missing something? Is this going to work as expected? submitted by /u/etroller [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2vovMg3

Solar newb, looking for career and education advice

Solar newb, looking for career and education advice Quick about me: currently in the military (7.5 years), transitioning out within the next 2-3 months. Education decisions: One of the best things about completing your honorable military service is the G.I. Bill. I want to use mine to tailor it towards my advancement in the Solar field to work towards my desired position. The local community college has a couple of options that I was hoping to...

Need advice on Solar City inverter repair

Need advice on Solar City inverter repair Hi, I have a Solar City rooftop system on my house. It uses a Fonius IG Plus inverter. The inverter has been shutting down during high afternoon temperatures with an error code "STATE 212". I called Solar City and they sent a field tech out to look at it. He troubleshot it to a neutral fault card. He informed me that my inverter comes with with either a arc fault card or neutral fault and mine has the neutral fault. He told me that the cards are known to fail every couple of years. Because of this he bypassed the card. He seemed to make it sound as if it is no big deal. Was this an appropriate fix? What does a neutral fault card do? Solar Broker vs Big Name Companies

Solar Broker vs Big Name Companies I am in the process of proceeding with solar after getting quotes every year for the last few years and never pulling the trigger. The big solar companies are offering the Panasonic 320w panels with Solaredge converters. I am also working with a solar broker (that came referred by a very trustworthy friend) that is offering Hyundai 355w panels with Enphase IQ6 micro-inverters. The broker is much more knowledgeable and much less interested in selling me the fluff so I would prefer to go with him. The financing is similar and the broker is a bit cheaper. After doing some research the micro-inverters would probably be better for my house since I'll have panels going south, east, and west. I am really leaning towards using the broker, but I feel it is more risky than using one of the bigger companies. The warranties are similar, but no production guarantee with the broker. Are there any other questions I should be asking that would help me feel more ...

Hopping On The Short Enphase Bandwagon

Image
Hopping On The Short Enphase Bandwagon On July 25th,  Prescience Point Capital Management recently released a report accusing Enphase energy Inc. ( ENPH ) of earnings manipulation. Prescience is an investment manager with a reputation for strong short-side analysis. I was intrigued, and decided to investigate Prescience’s claims for two reasons: I am generally concerned about overall market conditions, so adding a short position to my portfolio is attractive in the current market environment. As an analyst who specializes in clean energy stocks, I have suspected that Enphase would not survive much longer because I believe that its core technology is no longer the best solution for most applications.  As a poorly capitalized, unprofitable company, Enphase lacks the financial resources to regain a competitive edge. After considering the evidence in the report, and using one of my own favorite tools to detect possible earnings manipulation, I decided to join Prescience Poin...

Verifying Claims Made by Blue Raven

Verifying Claims Made by Blue Raven Hello fellow redditors. My wife and I are in the process of choosing a solar company. Our home is a good candidate for solar as it is south facing, newly built, and in a sunny state. In order to compare and contrast offers we requested quotes through Energy Sage. Additionally, we contacted a well known local installer that is not on Energy Sage. We now have all the quotes/offers. However, one sticks out in that it only recommends a 3 KW system while everyone else recommends a 4.5-5KW system. The basis for their 3 KW system is that the installation of 6 LED bulbs and use of a smart thermostat will cut our energy use by 20 percent. I am a bit leary to believe that claim. First, our house was built in 2017 and features all LED bulbs. Second, I am highly doubtful that a smart thermostat is going to reduce our energy consumption by that amount. Anyone run into the same sales pitch? Any hard data to back up such a claim? When I ask Blue Raven about har...

The Low Sulfur Diesel Crisis of 2020 And How To Prevent It

Image
The Low Sulfur Diesel Crisis of 2020 And How To Prevent It “The global economy likely faces an economic crash of horrible proportions in 2020, not for want of a nail but want of low-sulfur diesel fuel,” writes renowned energy analyst Phil Verleger in a note this month titled “$200 Crude, the Economic Crisis of 2020, and Policies to Prevent Catastrophe”. Not good timing for a White House re-election effort if, as expected, the blame falls on lack of preparedness in the 2017-2020 run-up to the projected crisis.. It’s a dire scenario but there’s hard data behind it, and though few go as far as Verleger, almost every expert is warning of a low-sulfur diesel; refining capacity crunch.  You can read the Verleger note in full here. The root cause?  A rule agreed by the  International Maritime Organization in 2008 and confirmed in 2016 to reduce sulphur content in marine fuels from 3.5 percent to 0.5 percent beginning in January 2020. The proximate cause?  Neith...

Do solar outlets exist?

Do solar outlets exist? I hope this is an appropriate sub for this question. I'm in the planning stages for a chicken coop in our back yard. I would love for our coop to be solar. I've been searching for solar powered blocks with regular plug in outlets (not just USB), but maybe they aren't a thing yet? I would want to be able to plug in a low powered fan to keep the chickens cool and timed rope lights to give them a little light at night and at dawn. Thank you! submitted by /u/UnapologeticJourney [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2AfbXNF

Question about ITC and panel upgrades

Question about ITC and panel upgrades So I'm looking into installing solar and have a bunch of quotes coming in. Seems to be converging towards VBHN330SA16 HIT panels and Solaredge optimizer/inverter. The thing is I have a south facing roof with no trees blocking - will it be better to go with the string inverter? I most likely will have to upgrade my zinsco panel - can that additional cost be included when calculating the tax credit? Thanks! submitted by /u/Careddit1 [visit reddit] [comments] https://ift.tt/2OjLrpm
