Welcome to /r/Solar - Here are the subbreddit rules, suggestions, and helpful links for mid-2018
Welcome to /r/Solar - mid-2018 edition

The current subreddit feature posts;

  • Shedding Light - this is a sticky post that goes up weekly where you can ask anything about solar. There are no stupid questions. An answer is not guaranteed nor is the timeliness of the responses but questions are often answered by participants here.
  • Help Wanted - this is a sticky post that goes up twice per month. It includes links to sites with job listings as well as links to resources related to solar training and career path info.

The Subreddit Rules
  • reddiquette is required. Trolling, insults, or antagonism towards the subreddit participants, the moderators, or even the community itself may result in a ban. Discuss and express opinions about solar but avoid making attacks / disparaging remarks.
  • Promoting anything you have affiliation with is restricted - No more than 10% of your submissions here should link to things which you are affiliated with (self-promotion). Repeat submissions of spam and self-promotion without following the 10% rule in this subreddit will lead to a ban of not just your account(s) but your site(s) as well. Also, refer to the site's policies on spam and self-promotion.
  • No blogspam / copypasta - Do not submit posts or comments which are only copy / paste of text from a blog post. This is a discussion forum.
  • New and low karma accounts are restricted - brand new accounts, low karma accounts, and those who have not participated in the comments of other /r/solar posts will not be able to make new posts in this subreddit. New account holders can ask questions in the Shedding Light post often found at the top of the subreddit.
  • No student surveys
  • No URLs in post titles
  • Images are restricted - images can only be submitted via reddit rather than linking to images off site.
  • Sites are restricted - some news, blog, social media, and other kinds of sites are restricted most often due to spam, personal info, or user tracking issues.

to avoid additional rules, please don't let things slide to the dark side

A Suggestion for Help Requests

Because of variances in things like regulations, prices, incentives, and amounts of solar radiation, it is useful to provide general location info such as country and state when asking for help/info regarding your solar project

User Flair

You may select user flair to be displayed with your username in this subreddit. We have provided a few categories covering most of our subreddit subscribers. Please let us know of any ideas you may have for other categories.

To choose your user flair, go to the top of the sidebar, find your username just below the subscribe/unsubscribe button, click 'edit' beside your name, and choose your flair.

Link Flair

Starting today, all the automated posts submitted by Automoderator are flaired "Feature Post" so you can easily locate them. We are considering various flairs for classifying the other posts here and have made some available for testing.

New Reddit

Reddit is working on a redesign of the site and most new accounts here are viewing the site using it. Some 'old' accounts have been added in as well. We've made efforts to modify the subreddit with the options currently available in the redesign but please consider it a work in progress. Site admin is not finished implementing everything. There are some major pieces still undone and some things they add don't always work as intended. As they add on new functionality, we'll give it a try.

A final necessary but sad note: Unfortunately, this subreddit has a troll who frequently returns. Rather than moving on, it appears being a recurring problem here is their chosen form of fun. People who consistently misquote site and subreddit rules to others, argue with moderators and admins about them, repeatedly violate many of the site and subreddit rules, and who are intentionally antagonistic to this subreddit and its moderators as well as site admin are not ever going to be welcome back here. Fortunately, most people get that and also know they are not above the rules. The mod team and the admin team all agree that this person is and has been a problem for this community and should not be allowed back here. If you see oddly off topic or antagonistic comments, please report them.
