24v panels to charge 12v batteries in RV?

24v panels to charge 12v batteries in RV? Most of the solar setups I see for RVs use 12v panels; I never see 24v panels. I plan to use a Victron MPPT 100/30 charge controller and would like to connect a single 300w panel. Assuming i have the space for it on the RV roof, is there any con to this as opposed to using a pair of 12v panels to achieve the same wattage? I would be charging a pair of 220ah 6v batteries wired in series if that matters. submitted by /u/eacheach [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2WuBk5n

Affordable Solar Installers in DC?

Affordable Solar Installers in DC? So I understand that Tesla matches the price of the cheapest installer but I can't use Tesla because my roof is flat. Powerwall follow up questions

Powerwall follow up questions I had previously posted the following, while floundering about, trying to determine how to get Tesla to turn on my Powerwall 2: https://www.reddit.com/r/solar/comments/9wq1xi/powerwall_2_inverter_question/ Not much has changed, other than me being vocal and persistent in reaching out to Con Edison, my provider, and Tesla. I am trying to coordinate a phone call between the Tesla Engineer and a Con Edison manager for tomorrow afternoon, and am trying to make sure I fully grok what I need to find out here. Can someone assist with the following questions: 1 - the PW2 datasheet I found here ( http://solarforward.com/pdf/products/Powerwall/Powerwall_2_AC_Backup_Datasheet_EN_NA.pdf ) states that I 208volts is needed. Con Edison has confirmed I am getting 208 service. Why is Tesla telling me I require 240 volt service? 2 - someone had mentioned a pika 3 Harbor Battery as an alternative. Is this something Tesla would get involved in? I will be ...

East/West orientation when no net metering is available?

East/West orientation when no net metering is available? Hey everyone. Im putting together a ground mounted 10kw grid tie with backup system. Even with a true south orientation 10kw is only estimated to offset about 20% of the sites electric usage. The local utility doesnt allow for any sort of net metering or billing so any excess production the batteries cant store wont be worth anything. The sites time of use is rather random and isnt expected to peak at any given time or follow any sort of pattern. Given these considerations would you go with an east west orientation or stay at true south? submitted by /u/bucsfanohman [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2GbsQu0

[Tool] The Solar Cost Workbook

[Tool] The Solar Cost Workbook The Solar Cost Workbook is for home solar systems that will remain connected to the grid. No battery bank is included. Plug in the numbers to see how much it will cost per month and find out how much you could potentially save. (If you want to see your electric bill after paying off the system please zero out the monthly payment cell.) I normally budget $190 US per month for my electric bill. (This is based upon my highest electrical bill last year and I usually pocket the difference.) I will be spending about $30 more per month for the next 12 years. Once the system is paid for my average monthly electric bill will be $36. submitted by /u/holzasago [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2RumyHS

Solar PPA question

Solar PPA question I hope this is the right sub for this question. I was looking around at the others and they are either deserted or for DIYers. I'm thinking of going Solar and was approached by a Vivint sales guy. This is the system he's attempting to "sell" me. Doing some research I find that Vivint has a reputation of kind of leaving people in the lurch once they get them to sign. So I'm already wary of that. I'm also a bit bothered by the fact that I'd never actually own the array myself and so I'd never get to a point where I own the system, and thus don't pay a rising price for the power generated by them. I'm pretty unclear where to go from here. My instinct tells me to look for other quotes, possibly local companies, etc. Any direction would be appreciated! Thanks. submitted by /u/zushiba [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2Tp1rZg

If you have solar and net metering, how does it work if you pick a “green” generation provider? General questions for Solar in Phoenix area home

General questions for Solar in Phoenix area home I’m looking into getting Solar for my home. I live in a Phoenix AZ suburb and I don’t plan to moving. I have received a few quotes for 27 panels of 325 Hanhwa Qcells (8.78kw) or 330 Panasonic panels (8.91kw) with a solar edge inverter. The price difference is about $4k between them. My concern is that different companies provided different annual production. Some estimated as high as 16,500 kWh and some were about 15,500 kWh for the same system ( Panasonic). 1) how do I determine what I’ll really see in terms of annual production? And realistic degradation rates. 2) is it worth getting the Panasonic panels over the Qcells or will the difference be marginal? I’m really wanting to maximize my production but only if it makes financial sense. Q cell systems were about $29k Panasonic was about $33k submitted by /u/moothane [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2TnKFK5

Google to purchase 10MW of solar power in Taiwan, its first in Asia

Google to purchase 10MW of solar power in Taiwan, its first in Asia Google has signed a deal to buy the output of a 10MW solar array in Tainan City, Taiwan . It's Google's first renewable energy contract in Asia, and the Taiwanese government has changed energy laws to allow it to proceed. Worldwide, Google purchases more than 3GW of renewable power, more than enough to offset its energy use, and allow it to claim it is 100 percent renewable. In Taiwan, the company lobbied hard for a change to Taiwan’s Electricity Act which would allow non-utility companies to buy renewable energy directly. Google is the first corporate power purchaser to act after the law was amended. Taiwan has a goal to shut down its nuclear energy plants by 2025, and is working to obtain up to 20 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by that date. Solar Panels and moving

Solar Panels and moving Cross post from r/legaladvice . To start off, I'm fully aware that we made stupid decisions here - I need help understanding our options though. TL;DR Stupidly trusted in solar company who said we could transfer payments to new buyers when selling house, finance company says loan is non-transferable, may now either be on the hook for solar panel payments on a house we no longer own or lose our dream house and $3000. About 8 months ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to get solar panels on our house. There's great tax incentives, we had just moved in less than a year before and weren't expecting to move, and we had some friends who were ranting and raving about how great they were (plus, you know, good for environment). We ended up going with a company based in Denver and financed with the company they directed us to. At the time we got our initial quote started, they told us, if you sell your house you have 3 options: include it in the cost of...

What are the terms? *Federal Tax Credit subtracts $19,632 *Illinois SRECs subtract $15,441.30 *Offset Solar pays 1st year of loan subtracting $3,411.13 *Loan terms = 20yr fixed at 3.99%, no prepay penalty. *Net cost if all incentives applied to loan = $26,956 + loan interest. What are our initial thoughts/takeaways? *The loan terms are actually better than expected, and cheaper than financing through home equity (we have a mtg in low 4%s and refinancing would raise that). *The cost of the panels and the inverter are around $12,000 if we source them ourselves online. Which means labor, mounting and permitting come in around $53,000, which I have to image is outrageous. I would have expected a total system cost of $25k-$30k ...

Please note: This is a community response based feature post in a smallish subreddit. An answer is not guaranteed nor is the timeliness of any responses but thankfully questions are often answered by the frequent participants here. Because of variances in things like regulations, prices, and amounts of solar radiation, it is useful to provide general location info such as country and state when asking for help/info regarding your solar project. However, please avoid giving very specific details of the locale so you are not violating the site rule on personal info. For example, name the region but not the address. What is potential of reflected/concentrated light-solar energy?

What is potential of reflected/concentrated light-solar energy? Imagine a bunch of mirrors in the sky (maintaining their position from some helium and/or their own solar panels). Wouldn't this make solar more viable than alternative sources of energy in areas that are commonly regarded as areas where solar isn't a good option - specifically, where there is pretty consistent but not so intense sunlight? Or would the extra work needed of getting the mirrors up there and stay there not be worth the extra energy/resources required? I'm interested in this because I'm a fan of the work of the economist Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen (note that I'm aware of some of the errors of his earlier work, as was he). Something he wrote about what the difference between what he called 'feasible technologies' and 'viable technologies'. A technology is 'viable' only when it is able to return an energy surplus sufficiently large to maintain its own operation/repl...

Help with solar quotes

Help with solar quotes Installed a smaller 6kw system in Philadelphia a few years back but ended up moving north to Bucks County. Gave the first offer to the Philadelphia company because they had excellent customer service when it came to the installation as well as any issues that came up after. My roof is corrugated metal, recently installed, perfectly south facing and a small garage that is also south facing. I wasn't intending to put solar on the garage but after discussion I will. I use around 10kw a year and plan on buying an EV in the next year, possibly a second in 5yrs. So my ideal size system is 10-15kw. Initial quote $3.19/watt $30580 9.6kw (Hanwha QCells 320 x 30) Solaredge HDwave inverter 25yr warranty on panels and inverter I would finance $10000 and the fee would be $1200 Sounded reasonable for the area, but I wanted a second quote so I went with a local Bucks County outfit. They wanted to beat them outright. Blew them out of the water. $2.42/watt $34509 14.26kw...

Questions about future solar installation after meeting and speaking with some installers

Questions about future solar installation after meeting and speaking with some installers Hi /r/solar We've been meeting with solar installers and I wanted to bounce some questions off all of you as part of my independent inquiry and research. I'm in California and we are shooting for 10.5 to 11.5 MWh annually based on previous energy bills and usage. Due to fire code we've been given a range of 14 to 20 panels on our best roof, 5 on our second best, and we have room for another 18 or so panels on not so great roofs. In regards to our best roof the low range of 14 is with fire fighter lanes on both sides; we may be able to get permitted to remove the lane on a single side and fit 2 or 3 more panels. Are the spec sheets and output predictions for panels made by Canadian Solar on the conservative side? In other words does anyone have experience installing Canadian Solar product and find that they produce more than anticipated? How common is this with Canadian Solar? How c...

Difference between Panasonic panels

Difference between Panasonic panels Our original solar quote was for Panasonic 330SA17 panels. The installer is offering N325K all black panels for the same price. Originally they said the N325ks would be an upcharge. I know the N325k means I would need one more panel for the same output but I have the roofspace. I tried to see what the main differences between the panels were but I couldn't really find anything that says one is better than the other. Am I ok with accepting the N325ks? I am always skeptical when companies offer "free" stuff and want to make sure I'm not getting screwed over. submitted by /u/_tufan_ [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2RiPcvw

Solar install conduit

Solar install conduit https://imgur.com/a/pNHHRRB The installer I'm using put in quite a lengthy conduit run on the outside. We never discussed ahead of time how the conduit would be run, and I didn't think to ask. When I asked about this run being so visible after the fact, they said they are planning to paint it to match the roof color upon completion. Note that it runs across the roof to the right over the garage because that's where the inverter is inside the garage (at my request). Is this approach acceptable? submitted by /u/completefudd [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit.ly/2WjUdYp

Existing system - add panels?

Existing system - add panels? I have an existing 24 panel system that produced 9.6 MWh last year. I still have a ton of good space on the SW facing side of my roof. Wondering what it would take to add more panels? The company I had do my initial installation was too flakey to use again, any suggestions on how to find good, reliable installers? would I need to do a new net metering agreement? I’m in Utah and grandfathered into the 1:1 agreement, so switching to the new scenario would likely not be in my favor. Edit: more info: Big house... Winter months have been great. Oct, Nov, Dec all less than $20 power bills. July, August, and September, not so much with bills around or just under $200. Enphase 880-00212 24 micro-inverters, but doesn’t say what they are Panels are SLA300M Silfab There is one set of breakers that is turned off that I assume is for another array as they aren’t connected to anything. submitted by /u/brokebuilder2 [visit reddit] [comments] http://bit....

Is net metering fair when you don’t pay transmission costs for the power you push to the grid?

Is net metering fair when you don’t pay transmission costs for the power you push to the grid? So I have a PV system and love it. I also love that in NJ I get a 1:1 credit for every kWh I produce so that I can use it anytime during the 12 month period. No TOU rates. My question is about the fairness of it... Last year, I produced more than what I used. My overproduction netted me a $80 credit from the electric company (my excess kWh at $0.04 which is the wholesale price). My fixed monthly customer charge is $3. So last year I took advantage of the grid, line workers, line maintenance, transformers, etc and actually made money from the electric company. In NJ there is a transmission cost and a generation cost. They only charge me those when I pull electricity from the grid. I feel that I should also pay transmission costs for the power I push to the grid because I’m using the grid infrastructure. It just doesn’t seem fair... submitted by /u/fpaddict [visit reddit] [comments] ...

Home solar system

Home solar system I’m not sure if this is the correct place to post this question but here goes. I am in SoCal and my electric bill per month over the last 2 years is 120-360. Prob avg 160 per month electric only. We recently installed a hot tub and now my electric only is 370 per month. kWh avg around 500 month with spikes to 700’s 3 month a year in summer. My recent bill and first with hot tub shows 1,069kWh for the month. About a 500 increase which pushes me to higher tiers etc. So looking at solar. We have concrete tiles and my roof faces east and west. What size system should I be looking at 5KW, 8 or 10? I would like the capacity to add an electric vehicle in the future and no longer worry about running ac. Assuming I need to re-paper roof as well. I also have a 100A FPE panel I assume will need to be upgraded as well to modern breakers. Any guidance that could be provided will be appreciated. I am currently collecting bids via yelp but wanted to reach out here to inform my...

Buying a home with active Tesla PPA

Buying a home with active Tesla PPA My wife and I are in the process of buying a house that has panels installed. I've recently learned the panels are actually in the form of a PPA. Of course they're trying to transfer the agreement over to us (another 18 years give or take). The owner claims the agreement has reduced overall bills from 400-600 to 200-400 a month, which sounds great on paper, however I can't account for those savings. I've got access to bills prior to the installation and afterward and I'm looking at the rates and it seems like the PPA rate is almost identical to the power company rate. The most recent total rate I could find via the power company website (Recent bills seem to lack any rate values outside generation so I can't compare accurately) saved a whole $11 a year at 6000 kWh consumed. What I'm trying to find is the disconnect. If the generation + tax + distribution rates combined is what I should be comparing, or if there is som...

New solar installation from SunRun - our electric bill hasn’t changed.

New solar installation from SunRun - our electric bill hasn’t changed. I’m hoping to get some insight from actual users first before I call out to the company. We signed up for solar panels through SunRun back in July. Everything was finally set up in October, and we went solar. Our new ConEd bill came in, and it was still around $95. Which was about average, maybe slightly less than normal. Says we used about 380 kWh. SunRun shows that we produced 213 kWh of energy. From what I understand, that means we used a total of 593 kWh in November. Our previous November has never been that high, and our highest usage over the year was July, when we had AC running constantly, and we used 640 kWh. It doesn’t add up that we almost used the same amount of power in November, when it was averaging 45-55 degrees. We’ve upgraded a lot of the lights to LEDs, smart lights with energy consumption in mind, to keep usage down. I don’t want to accept their mindset of “you use more power when you go sola...

Can I get some help with my system?

Can I get some help with my system? Northern California 2000 Sq ft house. South facing roof. Everything is electric (heater, pool, water, appliances), so we use a lot of energy. Suffice to say I am an excellent candidate for solar. Our bill is usually around $350 a month from PG&E. Doing some energy upgrades but probably going to add a few things anyway. Anyways, usage is not the problem, I've whittled that down in energy projects and insulation. R60 in the attic. Windows. Lots of other stuff. The issue is I don't know if I am getting a good deal on panels, equipment and labor. The system I priced out was 45 60-cell panels and equipment. The systems will all come with SolarEdge inverters, iron ridge racks etc. Basically the lot was about $12500 priced out on Wholesalesolar.com. Plus some other stuff. Onto the panels. Q-cells G5 BLK 305 - $300 per panel (what the installer recommends). So $13,500 Mission Solar 310 - $200 per panel. So $9000 Canadian Solar 310...

Covanta Turns Ash Collector

Image
Covanta Turns Ash Collector City Garbage and Trash Collection circa 1900 Well into the early 1900s ash collectors plied the streets of America’s cities, picking up ash buckets left at curbs and stoops by households and businesses.  The ash collectors sold as much as possible for brick making and soil improvement.  The rest went to the handiest dumps. Since then large utilities have taken over the job of heating and lighting buildings.  Coal-fired power plants have become the largest producers of ash.  The American Coal Ash Association reports that 53 million metric tons of coal cash were generated in 2013, of which 23 million metric tons were re-used for cement and bricks.  The rest was stored in landfills or special disposal sites, in such large quantities presenting potential sources of pollution for nearby water bodies. There are other sources of ash.  Municipal waste is increasingly diverted from landfills to incineration...
