How does net metering work if you pick a third party generation provider?

I am in NJ and we can pick a number of different generation providers while keeping our regular electric company for the transmission.

If you have solar and net metering, how does it work if you pick a “green” generation provider?

Also, after the 12 month period when you do your net metering true-up, what costs do they use to pay you back the excess production? Is it the same $0.04?
