Solar thermal for pool heating

Generally, I've been taught to use the thin plastic black tube stuff for solar thermal, and leave the expensive vacuum tubes and copper pipes for higher temperatures domestic hot water. As the volumes of water and thermal energy plus costs just made more sense.
Is this still the case? What's a vacuum tube gonna cost and what can it do is a place like Palm Springs? Customer of mine has a big gas bill to heat his pool - what can be done with an 8ft tall x 100ft wide wall?

Domestic hot water focused hardware, can I repurpose and use what I got even if the cost is more?
