Thinking about starting my own thing... Need some advice

TLDR; I want to start a solo sales business model & contract out the installation only. I'm wondering what profit margins I could be looking at.

Northern Utah Market

I've been working for solar companies for the last 4-5 years & am quite frankly getting pretty tired of working with amateurs. I've been in system design most of the time, but have moved back & forth between proposal building & surveying frequently.

With that said, I've been thinking about running my own solo sales business while contracting out the installation. I would do everything up from knocking on doors, to filing a permit on the same day, or next business day, as well as commissioning systems post installation & setting up monitoring.

My hopes are that I can sell an honest & affordable product & provide customers with actual answers & detail instead of pushing a signed contract. I would determine before any contracts are signed the viability of the project as a whole, & possibly turn down projects that could get dicey. I also hope to help with the installations to a point where I can at the very least do the roof install myself. I'm an apprentice electrician & could possibly do the rest once I journeyman up.

I see a combination of businesses that struggle & are in debt pushing $4+ /w, while also seeing small businesses surviving at ~$3/ w. What kind of prices could I give to consumers with my solo business model? Does anybody know the profit margins of these small businesses?
