MPPT charge controller can take 12 to 40VDC up to 10 amps. Can I connect another source of DC input that is constant vdc and up to 10 amps instead of a solar panel?

Hi folks,

I'm fairly new to solar and solar charge controllers. My understanding of most PWM and MPPT charge controllers are they are a DC to DC converter. That is, it takes a DC source, and converts the amperage and voltage input into a charge bank. If that is correct, can't I use another source of DC charging instead of solar? I know that defeats the purpose, but sometimes I want to charge my lithium ion bank with a gas generator at night when I don't have solar input.

Any reason why this is a bad idea?
