What's the current state of bifacial modules?

I'm looking into some ground mount designs for home solar, and one thing that's come up recently that I don't know that much about are bifacial modules.

They seem to now be a thing that's in limited general availability, though solar installers talk them up a bit in my experience.

A few specific questions:

  • Will they produce identical power from the opposite sides, given identical illumination, or is there a very definite "front side" and "back side"?
  • Has anyone experimented with a north-south facing "fin" of panels? It seems this would optimize power production far closer to actual use patterns, if one didn't have shading issues (which I wouldn't).
  • Who actually sells them? I can find only a few vendors online.
  • How are they rated? Are they rated under STC test conditions of illumination from a single side, such that they would often be producing far more than rated power?

Thanks!
