Right now an ESS >150kW with 2hrs is sold at about $500/kWh. Which means the payback is <10yrs when electricity rates are over 0.15$/kWh. So storing energy instead of selling it back to the grid at whole sale already makes sense without incentive.
If the price of modules go up, it will make more sense to store the energy then selling it back at wholesale prices.
Also, AC coupled system means that you could go back to previous customer and sell an upgrade.
I personally hate the news from yesterday, but I also think it will open another door that will make life even tougher on utilities.
